Nystagmus Surgery
As mentioned, nystagmus is a condition in which the eye moves involuntarily and without control. Nystagmus appears in both eyes and can vary in frequency and extent depending on the cause of the phenomenon. Nystagmus is usually accompanied by poor vision and quality.
Nystagmus surgery?
Nystagmus surgery is one of the options available to treat the condition and improve visual acuity and quality of vision. The operation is designed to significantly reduce the frequency and extent of eye movement and thus improve the condition of the eye. Reducing the range and frequency of movement leads to greater eye stability and thus also improves vision.
In addition, if there is an abnormal head position due to nystagmus (tilting or turning the head, raising or lowering the head and chin), the operation can be very easy and thus the patient will have a normal head position and normal growth. If in addition to nystagmus there is strabismus, it can be corrected in the same operation.
It is important to note that the nystagmus operation does not completely eliminate nystagmus and that nystagmus will remain, but the benefit of the operation is to reduce the severity of nystagmus and thus improve vision, stabilize the eyes, improve head position. And correct the accompanying strabismus.
Many studies have shown that after the operation, the frequency and range of nystagmus movement decreases significantly and that there is a significant improvement in vision. There is also an improvement in the quality of vision and contrast. Many patients also notice an improvement in self-confidence and the ability to be independent. It should be noted that the operation is not aimed at treating nystagmus but rather at improving it and reducing the frequency and range of eye movement.
What are the types of nystagmus operations?
There are many types of operations. Determine the type of operation performed by Dr. Nasser according to the existing results, vision potential, frequency and strength of tremor, components of tremor (horizontal, vertical, circular), type of tremor (INF, PAN, FMNS), presence of strabismus, presence of abnormal head position, etc.
How is nystagmus surgery performed by Dr. Nasser?
The nystagmus operation is performed by Dr. Nasser under general anesthesia while the patient is asleep, without the need for an overnight stay in the hospital. The patient is often given sedatives to help you feel more comfortable. The operation is usually performed on both eyes.
During the surgery, Dr. Nasser exposes the eye muscles through a deep incision on the surface of the eye located under the eyelid from the inside.
This way, no scars will appear after the surgery. The eye muscles are then exposed and attached to the eyeball in new positions depending on the type of puncture. The conjunctiva will be closed with thin sutures that are buried and will not be visible to the eye and will dissolve on their own after two weeks. At the end of the operation, a transparent eye shield is placed on your eyes and you are immediately sent home with specific instructions and an appointment for an examination the next day.
